The Correspondence Branch is first listed as part of the Council of Education, with the earliest staff appointment listed as 1 February 1867.(1) Members of the Council of Education were appointed on 1 January 1867.(2) The preceeding Board of National Education lists a clerk, and a messenger and office keeper as staff, but not as a separate Branch.(3)The Correspondence Branch was responsible for the administration of matters relating to education, including indexes and registers of letters received, policy issues, subject files, and copies of letters sent.
