Full description

The State Compensation Board was established on 3 December, 1984 by the Workers Compensation (Amendment) Act 1984 (Act No.90, 1984). The Act (which also established the Compensation Court of New South Wales) abolished the Workers Compensation Commission of New South Wales. (1)

The State Compensation Board was headed by a Chairman who was also the Chief Executive Officer. Some of the responsibilities of the board include, licensing and supervising worker’s compensation insurers and self-insurers, managing compensation funds, conducting medical examinations of injured workers and providing policy advice to the Minister and the Workcover Review Committee. (2)

Under the Workers Compensation Act, 1987 (Act No.70, 1987) the Board became responsible for the administration of vocational re-education and rehabilitation schemes. The new legislation also required the board to monitor entitlements to, and payments of compensation as well as giving it the right to be heard before the Compensation Court or a Commissioner. (3)

The State Compensation Board was abolished on 1 July 1989 by the Workers Compensation Amendment Act 1988 (Act No.132, 1988) (4) which also created the Workers Compensation and Rehabilitation Authority.
