Full description

On 26 January 1892 the Watch-house and Lock-up at Bombala was proclamed a Public Gaol, Prison and House of Correction.(1) Provision for the detention of prisoners became necessary consequent upon the opening of a local Court of Quarter Sessions.(2) In 1892 Bombala Gaol received 26 prisoners, with 24 prisoners discharged, 18 prisoners entered the gaol in 1893, with 18 prisoners discharged.(3) Although listed as a Prison for the purposes of detailing entries and discharges, prisoners held and accommodation, in all other returns Bombala is listed as one of a group of "police gaols".(4) In 1927 details for Bombala Gaol are no longer provided, and although Police gaols are noted as 11 in number, individual gaols are no longer listed.(5) In a Proclamation dated 16 November 1939, it was deemed expedient to discontinue the use of the buildings and enclosures comprising Bombala Gaol, and for Bombala Gaol to cease it's function as a Prison on the 30th November 1939.(6) Endnotes
