The Technical Services Directorate of the Roads and Traffic Authority was established in the financial year ended 30 June 1990. The senior officers and business units of the Directorate were:Bridge Engineer
Authority Business Undertakings
Consulting Services
Engineering Services
Materials Services and
Asset Control Technology. (1) Additional responsibilities taken on by the following year included
Logistic Support
Planning
Traffic Management and
Transport Study Group (2) The Directorate became increasingly systems oriented adding Technical Systems and Quality and Program administration to its role in 1993. A General Manager, Pavements was added in the same year (3) Responsibility for the Crash Laboratory was taken on in 1994. In this year some of the senior officers' designations were altered with the addition of the word 'Technology' after the title e.g. General Manager Traffic Technology, and there was a General Manager, Technology Development heralding a change which would occur the following year. (4) By 16 October 1995 the Division had been re-named RTA Technology, but without significant alteration to its responsibilities which were listed as follows:
Road technology
Pavements
Scientific Services
Bridge Technology
Traffic Technology and
Technical Services (5) In 1996 the Crash Laboratory was again added to the responsibilities of the Directorate and Fleet Services were also attached. (6) The following year geomatics and country technical services were added (7) By 2000 the Roads and Traffic Authority was restructured and most of the functions of RTA Technology transferred to the Road Network Infrastructure Branch.
