Full description
Moonan Brook, in the County of Durham, operated as a Provisional School from 1869 until August 1879 (1). Provisional Schools were established in areas where at least fifteen children, but fewer than the twenty-five required for a Public School, could be expected to attend. Parents provided the building and furniture, while the Council of Education or later the Department of Education paid the teacher and supplied the books and equipment (2). Moonan Brook operated as a Public School from August 1879. Public Schools are the basic elementary school in the New South Wales education system. The attendance of twenty-five children was required from 1867-1880 to establish a Public School (3). Moonan Brook Public School closed in March 1970 (4). FOOTNOTES1.
