Full description
Wattley Hill Provisional School in the County of Gloucester was established on 24 April 1939. (1) Provisional Schools were conducted in areas where insufficient children were available to justify the creation of a public school. Often the parents provided the building for the school while the Department of Education supplied the teacher and teaching materials. When the Wattley Hill School opened a minimum of twelve pupils was required for the maintenance of a Provisional School.
In 1957 the classification of 'provisional school' was discontinued. The remaining schools were converted to public schools that offered primary education. The minimum attendance at a public school was reduced to nine students.
Wattley Hill Public School closed soon after 26 March 1959 when the majority of the pupils were transferred to neighbouring schools. (2)
