Ulan Provisional School in the County of Bligh was established in February 1884. When the Ulan School commenced a minimum of twelve students was required to establish a school of this status. The parents were required to provide premises for the school and the Department of Public Instruction supplied a teacher and teaching materials.

The School was converted to a Public School in April 1889 continuing in this status until October 1894. A Public School offered primary level courses, and the required minimum attendance was twenty pupils from the 1880s.

In February 1895 the School was converted to a half time school in conjunction with Murragamba Half Time School. A half-time School was an elementary school that catered for children in areas of scarce population. Teachers visited two 'stations' at each of which up to ten children were assembled for instruction. In 1898 the required number of children at each station was reduced to eight.

The School was converted to a Public School again from November 1908, until June 1913 when it was reduced to half-time status once more - this time sharing a teacher with Cooks Gap Half-Time School. In November 1917 the School was converted to a provisional school until April 1919 when it operated again as public school.

Ulan Public School was closed on 17 December 1970 when the teacher was withdrawn without replacement. (1)
