Full description

Newcastle South Public School in the County of Northumberland was established in May 1872. A Public School offered primary level courses, and a minimum attendance of twenty five children was required to establish and maintain a school of this classification when Newcastle South School commenced.
[The School was the successor to the former Welsh Congregational Church denominational school (1860-1872), whose premises it occupied and whose Headmaster continued as Principal of the new establishment.]

A new school building was completed in 1875, with further new buildings being constructed c.1888 and 1908-09.
The school was divided into Boys,’ Girls’ and Infants’ Departments by 1909.

Newcastle South school was converted to a Public School Plus in January 1920. Public Schools plus offered courses at primary and secondary level. Newcastle South school offered secondary courses in Home Science from January 1920 until June 1923, and Commerce from March 1920 until April 1930. The Home Science School curriculum provided commercial training for girls and included subjects such as cookery, home management and household hygiene, although girls could also take a commercial course with subjects such as economics, shorthand, and typing. The Commercial School curriculum provided vocational training for boys intent on a business career (some girls were also enrolled from 1925). Subjects included business principles and book-keeping. In May 1926 the School was re-named The Junction (3) Public School Plus.

In April 1930 the school again reverted to the status of public school.

The school was established as a demonstration school in March 1949 in conjunction with the Newcastle Teachers College. (1) Demonstration schools were used to demonstrate educational methods to Trainee teachers, and to give practice in teaching. These schools were ordinary schools with the demonstration function added.

In 2004, the Junction (3) School was located at Union Street, Merewether in the Hunter/Central Coast District. (2)
