Full description
Stewarts Brook Provisional School [II] in the county of Durham was established in February 1888. Provisional Schools were established in areas where at least fifteen children, but fewer than the number required for a Public School, could be expected to attend. Parents provided the building and furniture, while the Department of Education paid the teacher and supplied books and equipment. The School was converted into a Public School in May 1889. Public Schools are basic elementary schools in the New South Wales education system. From 1880-1957, the attendance of twenty children was required to establish a Public School; and from 1957 the minimum figure was reduced to nine. Stewarts Brook Public School was closed December 1958. REFERENCE:Government Schools of New South Wales 1848-2003. NSW Department of Education and Training 2003.
