Full description
Salt Ash, in county Gloucester, operated as a Provisional School from July 1883 until January 1884. Provisional Schools were established in areas where at least fifteen children, but fewer than the twenty-five required for a Public School, could be expected to attend. Parents provided the building and furniture, while the Council of Education or later the Department of Education paid the teacher and supplied the books and equipment. From January 1884 Salt Ash has operated as a Public School. Public Schools are the basic elementary school in the New South Wales education system. From 1880-1957, the attendance of twenty children was required to establish a Public School; and from 1957 when Provisional Schools were converted to Public Schools, the minimum figure was reduced to nine. In 2004 Salt Ash Public School was located at Salt Ash Avenue, Salt Ash, in the district of Hunter/Central Coast (1).
