Full description

Mount Wills, in county Northumberland, operated as a Provisional School from 1868 until September 1880. (1) Provisional Schools were established in areas where at least fifteen children, but fewer than the twenty-five required for a Public School, could be expected to attend. Parents provided the building and furniture, while the Council of Education or later the Department of Education paid the teacher and supplied the books and equipment. (2)

From October 1880 Mount Wills operated as a Public School. In February 1883 Mount Wills was renamed Rothbury Public School. (3) Public Schools are the basic elementary school in the New South Wales education system and have operated under this title since 1867. Until 1880 the attendance of twenty-five children was required to establish a public school. From 1880-1957, twenty children were required; and from 1957 when Provisional Schools were converted to Public Schools, the minimum figure was reduced to nine. Rothbury Public School was closed December 1964. (4)
