The Cumberland and Coast District of the Courts of General and Quarter Sessions was established on 1 January 1859. Courts were held at places in the following area - Sydney, Western Sydney (Penrith and Windsor) the South Coast to Eden and the Hunter area. The district was re-named the Metropolitan and Coast District in 1865, the Metropolitan and Hunter District in 1878 and the Metropolitan, Suburban and Hunter District in 1891.

The District was staffed by up to three Chairmen who were judges of the District Court, Crown Prosecutors and a Clerk of the Peace.

Courts were conducted to hear less serious criminal cases at various places within the district. The dates at which Courts were conducted in each place were proclaimed in the New South Wales Government Gazette. In 1879 the Courts sat at Windsor, Parramatta, Sydney, Maitland, Singleton, Muswellbrook and Campbelltown. (1)

In 1903 the district was replaced by the Metropolitan District in which only the Sydney Court continued. The other Courts were dispersed as follows -
Parramatta to the Western District;
Newcastle and Maitland to the Southern and Hunter District; and
Singleton to the Northern District.
