Records for Maerannie Provisional School in the County of Durham begin in December, 1923 (1), although its original status is unclear. The school was a Provisional School at least from July, 1925. It became a Public School in November, 1957. The spelling of the school’s name was changed to “Mirannie” from February, 1966. The school closed in May, 1970. Provisional Schools were established in areas where the school population was too small to support a public school. The parents provided the school premises and the Department of Education supplied the teacher and teaching materials. At the time that the Minimbah Provisional School [I] operated an attendance of ten pupils was required for a school of this classification. In 1945 the number was reduced to nine. Provisional schools ceased in 1957 and the remaining schools were converted into public schools for which a student population one nine was adequate. Endnotes
