Mangrove Lower Provisional School in the county of Northumberland was established in August 1868. It became a Public School in July 1880, and was renamed Mangrove Creek Public School in 1889. From February 1902 until July 1909 Mangrove Creek School was a Half-Time School with Island Flat School. It then reverted to being a Public School, and retained this status until its closure in June 1938. (1) Provisional Schools emerged in 1867 and could be established in areas where at least 15 children, but fewer than the 25 required for a Public School, could be expected to attend. The minimum number of students was reduced to twelve in the 1880s. The parents were required to provide the premises for the school and the Department of Public Instruction supplied the teacher and teaching equipment. Half-Time Schools were elementary schools which catered for children in areas of scattered population. A teacher visited two centres where the children assembled. When the Mangrove Creek School was reduced to a part-time one a total attendance of 16 children was required between the two locations. By 1908 no fixed number was stipulated. When the Mangrove Lower Public School was established, a school of this classification was required to have a minimum attendance of 20 pupils. A school established at Mangrove had already been known as Mangrove Creek Public School from 1872 until its closure in 1877 [see Agency no.3896]. ENDNOTES
