Full description

Lewinsbrook Subsidised School opened on 20 April, 1933, in the Department-owned premises previously used by Lewinsbrook Provisional School [I] (1) Subsidised schools were established in areas where the attendance was so small that a provisional school could not be justified. The parents were required to provide the building and pay the teacher but received a subsidy for each pupil. Technically, subsidised schools were not government schools. The Department of Education did, however, allow former government school buildings to be used for subsidised schools although the parents were required to maintain the premises. In March 1945 the decision was made to convert the school to a Provisional School as soon as a teacher became available. (2) The Subsidised school ceased on 22 May 1945 when the School re-opened as Lewinsbrook Provisional School [II] (3) Endnotes:
