The inaugural meeting of the Academic Committee of Council of the Goulburn Teachers College (GTC) was convened on 15 August 1973. (1) As a Committee of Council, the Academic Committee reported directly to the Council of the College. The initial task of the Committee was to consider the academic structure of the College. This included a review of the College’s existing and future courses, in order to clearly define the aims and objectives of the College. (2) Predominantly, the Academic Committee was seen as a forum for the production of College policy, whilst the implementation of policy was left to other Committees. (3) The terms of reference approved for the Academic Committee by the Council were to consider and recommend to the latter:
- new courses and significant changes to existing courses;
- the granting of academic awards;
- awards in terms of by-law 11(3);
- significant changes to the standards of qualification for admission and standards for continuation of students;
- significant changes to the conditions of employment (including study leave policy) for academic staff;
- granting of fellowships, scholarships, bursaries and prizes;
- fostering of and financial support for research projects;
- the academic projections on which triennium estimates should be based; and
- the academic development of the College. (4)
After February 1980, the Academic Committee of Council held joint meetings with the Academic Board. (5) These joint meetings continued until the Minister for Education announced that the Goulburn College of Advanced Education (GCAE) would be amalgamated with the Riverina College of Advanced Education (RCAE). (6) Subsequently, the final meeting of the Academic Committee of Council was held on 18 November 1981, at which time the Committee was disbanded. (7) Endnotes:
