Gosford Municipality [II] was established on 24 October 1936 when five and a-half square miles of land was taken from Erina Shire to form the new Municipality of Gosford.(1) A Gosford Municipality had previously existed between 11 November 1886 and 23 January 1908 (see Agency No.3812) The Governor appointed a Provisional Council for Gosford on 24 October 1936 with full powers. The Provisional Council was responsible for the establishment of the Council’s administration and for conducting the first election. Those appointed to the Provisional Council were: William Grahame, Ralf Mortimer, Herbert Chessher, John Shanahan, Charles Staples, William Grahame, James Paul, Adrian Hickey, and William Pike.(2) Gosford’s Municipal Council was to consist of nine aldermen. Erina Council was required to transfer to Gosford’s Provisional Council all certificates, deeds, documents and records for property now located in the new Shire as well as extracts from electoral and rate-payer rolls.(3) The Local Government Act of 1919 provided for the establishment of County Councils by whole, groups of, or parts of municipalities and shires to perform nominated functions delegated by the Councils concerned. Gosford Municipality combined with the Shires of Erina and Woy Woy to form the Brisbane Water County Council in 1942 to provide electricity to the three local government areas.(4) The role of the Brisbane Water County Council included the construction extension, protection, maintenance, control and management of works for the supply of electricity; the supply of electricity; supply and installation of electrical fittings and appliances; and to grant permission for other parties to supply electric current to the public. Gosford Municipality provided two representatives to the Brisbane Water County Council.(5) On 1 January 1947, Gosford Municipality ceased to exist when two new Shires were established from the former Municipality of Gosford and the former Shires of Erina and Woy Woy. These new Shires were Gosford Shire and Wyong Shire.(6) ENDNOTES
