Lewinsbrook Provisional School [II] in the County of Durham opened in May 1945. This re-opening represented the conversion of the subsidised school which had operated there since 1933 into a provisional school. (1) A provisional school was one in which the school population was too small to justify the opening of a public school. In 1945 nine pupils were required to maintain a provisional school. The premises were provided by the parents and the Department of Education supplied the teacher and teaching materials. In 1957 Provisional Schools were withdrawn and the definition of a public school was altered to include those with an attendance of nine or more children. The Lewinsbrook Public School opened in November 1957 as a result of this reclassification of schools. Lewinsbrook remained a Public School until its closure in May 1964. Schools had first come to Lewinsbrook in 1852 when a provisional school was conducted there until December 1854.
