Full description

Big Creek Provisional School in the county of Durham, was opened in May 1879. A provisional school was one which operated in an area of small population. The Department of Education supplied the teacher, books and equipment while the parents provided the premises. In November 1884 the school became a half-time school sharing a teacher with Trevallyn Half-Time School . In February 1907 the school was converted to a Public School and continued with this status until its closure in June 1937. The school was re-established at Big Creek in May 1940. This school was later known as Hilldale Public School. Reference
