Full description

The first meeting of the Board of Graduate Studies of Charles Sturt University (CSU) was convened on 7 May 1996. (1) The establishment of this Committee was approved by the Academic Senate resolutions AS 96/13-17. (2) The Board of Graduate Studies, which is required to conduct at least four ordinary meetings a year, replaced the Higher Degrees Committee, as the principal advisory body of the Academic Senate on all academic policies within the University relating to higher degree programs. (3) The membership of the Board of Graduate Studies comprised:
- the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Graduate Training) Presiding Officer;
- the Presiding Officer of the Academic Senate;
- one research professional doctorate or higher research degree student nominated by the Charles Sturt University Students’ Association (CSUSA);
- the Sub-Deans for Graduate Studies of each Faculty or an equivalent senior academic staff member of the Faculty appointed by the Dean of the Faculty; and The functions of the CSU Board of Graduate Studies are:
- to be the principal advisory body to the Academic Senate on all academic policies within the University relating to higher degree research programs and research professional doctorates and the regulations relating to those programs;
- to determine the following matters in respect of individual candidates where such matters are referred to the Board:
(i) consider for approval applications for registration as a candidate for a research higher degree. Applicants may be required to undertake specified work and/or sit for such examinations as the Board may determine.
(ii) consider for approval thesis and dissertation topics.
(iii) review at least annually the progress of each research higher degree candidate and as a result of such review, make a determination of progression, or specify additional work or examinations, or the extension or termination of candidature.
(iv) appoint external and/or internal supervisors and examiners.
(v) receive examiners reports and the accompanying recommendations of the relevant Faculty and make recommendations to the Academic Awards Committee for the awarding or otherwise of the higher degree.
- to submit the minutes of its proceedings to the Academic Senate;
- to submit the triennial and annual plans for research training to the Academic Senate for approval; and
- to submit an annual report on the Research Training Scheme to the Academic Senate. (5)
