On 1 January 1980, the Yass Municipal Council and The Goodradigbee Shire Council were dissolved and amalgamated to become the Shire of Yass consisting of an area of about 3,416.7 square kilometres. (1)
On 2 April 1982, 34 hectares was transferred from the Shire of Yass to the Shire of Gunning. (2)
Effective from 1 Jan 1989, there was an alteration of boundaries of the Shire of Yarrowlumla and Shire of Yass with an area of about 12,565.5 square metres, being part of portion 215, Parish of Goorooyarroo, County of Murray in the Shire of Yarrowlumla transferred to the Shire of Yass. (3) An area of about 8 hectares from the Shire of Yass was added to the Shire of Harden on 24 April 1992. (4)
As a result of reforms processes in 2004, the number of councils in NSW was reduced from 172 to 154. Yass Shire Council was one of the councils amalgamated. It was proclaimed that from 11 February 2004, the Areas of Cooma-Monaro, Crookwell, the City of Goulburn, Gunning, Mulwaree, the City of Queanbeyan, Tallaganda, Tumut, Yarrowlumla and Yass were to be amalgamated so as to constitute new Areas having the names of Cooma-Monaro, Eastern Capital City Regional, Greater Argyle, Greater Queanbeyan City, Tumut, Upper Lachlan and Yass Valley. The Yass Valley Area consisted about 3,635.04 square kilometres from land which was in the former Yass Shire, Gunning Shire and Yarrowlumla Areas. (5)
