The West Kempsey Gaol appears to have been established in 1884 when records indicate that it received first prisoners. During the year there were 48 prisoners received and 45 discharged. (1) The Gaol’s accommodation provided cells for two separated and six associated prisoners, and on 31 December 1884 there were three sentenced prisoners. (2) The Gaol was a police gaol used for prisoners with sentences of fourteen days or less. The original staff consisted of an acting gaoler and an acting matron from beginning. (3) From 1898 until its abolition the Gaol was known as called Kempsey (West) or Kempsey Gaol . (4) The gaol was listed in the second schedule of Prisons Act 1899 as one of public gaols, prisons and houses of correction in existence then as Kempsey (West). (5) The Kempsey Gaol ceased to exist on 31 December 1941 following a proclamation from 15 December 1941 that the buildings and enclosures used at Kempsey, as a prison should cease to be a prison. (6) Last entrance to the Kempsey Gaol was on 26 December 1941 and last prisoner was discharged to the Kempsey Police on 1 January 1942. . (7) FOOTNOTES:
