On 19 October 1978 the Department was re-established as the Department of Decentralisation. The Department assumed responsibility for decentralisation and associated development activities in non-metropolitan areas and growth centres administration. The functions associated with development were transferred to the new Ministerial portfolio of Mineral Resources and Development. (1) This administrative change was retrospectively proclaimed in the NSW Government Gazette of 4 January, 1980 (2)
On 14 March 1980 the Development Division of the Department of Mineral Resources and Development and the Department of Decentralisation joined to form the Department of Industrial Development and Decentralisation. The Department’s charter was to encourage the growth and development of Industry and Commerce within the State and to develop employment opportunities. (3)
In June 1982 the Government Information Service was transferred to the Department of Industrial Development and Decentralisation from the Department of Services. (4)
Following the Management and Strategy Review, the Department’s activities in 1985/86 were reorganized into a new Divisional structure and the major operating Divisions were: Policy Development Division; Technology, Business and Trade Development Division; Advisory and Extension Services; Office of Small Business; Corporate Services and Financial Support (5). The Overseas Trade Authority was added to the Department in 1986. (6)
In December 1987 as a result of a further administrative review the Office of Small Business was removed from the Department of Industrial Development and Decentralization. (7)
The Department of Industrial Development and Decentralisation was abolished on 30 March 1988 and its functions were taken over by the newly established Department of State Development. (8)
