Coffs Harbour Provisional School [I] was established in County Fitzroy in March 1885. (1) Provisional schools were established in areas where at least 15 children were required to attend. (2)
During August 1888 the school became Coffs Harbour Half-Time School [I], operating in conjunction with Bonville Half-Time School up to June 1890. (3) Half-time schools were established in areas where at least 20 children were required to attend in two groups of ten or more. (4)
In July 1890 the school was converted to Coffs Harbour House to House School, and operated in that capacity until December 1891. (5) House to house schools were established in sparsely populated areas, which were visited by itinerant teachers who provided basic elementary education. (6)
The school again became Coffs Harbour Half-Time School [II] in January 1892, operating in conjunction with Massey Half-Time School until December 1892. (7) The school continued as a half-time school, from January 1893 operating with Kororo Half-Time School until the latter school's closure in August 1895. (8)
The school became Coffs Harbour Provisional School [II] in September 1895, operating in that capacity until September 1896. (9) The school became Coffs Harbour Public School [I] in October 1896, operating as such until its closure in December 1927. (10) A public school offers basic elementary education at a primary school level. (11)
A later public school operated at Coffs Harbour from 1939. (12)
