Full description

On 6 June 1928 the Governor united the Municipality of Tumut and the Shire of Gadara. As from 1 July 1928, the area formed by the union of the areas as a Shire was named the Shire of Tumut and constituted into the following four Ridings: 'A' Commencing on the northern boundary of the Shire Tumut at its intersection with the eastern boundary of the parish of Calafat, county of Wynyard and bounded by the boundaries of the parish of Gadara south-easterly and south-westerly and a southern boundary of the parish of Adelong westerly to the road from Adelong to Tumbarumba by the road to southerly to Adelong Creek to the parish of Hindmarsh, to the southern boundary of the Shire. 'B' and 'C' Ridings both commence on the eastern boundary of the Shire at its intersection with the northern boundary of the parish of Goobarragandra, county of Buccleuch. 'D' Riding commenced on the left bank of the Tumut River at the intersection with the eastern side of East street town of Tumut. (1)

The Shire consisted of eight Councillors. Pending the election, the following people were appointed as the Provisional Council: 'A Riding': Samuel Lindsay and Robert Joseph Clark Anderson Benson. 'B Riding': Daniel Lane Herliby and Henry Godfrey. 'C Riding': Albert Everard Herring and Arthur Neville Stacy. 'D Riding': James Elphick and James Gordon. (2)

On 21 December 1983, a petition in the Government Gazette stated that from 1 January 1984, approximately 1.35 hectares of land from the Shire of Tumut would be transferred to the City of Wagga Wagga. (3)

In 2002 the total area of the Shire of Tumut was 3760 square kilometres, 2315 square kilometres of which was State Forest. (4)

Tumut Shire was amalgamated with Tumbarumba Shire on 12 May 2016 to form Snowy Valleys Council. (5)
