Full description

The Information Services branch of the Department of Urban Affairs and Planning was formed when the Geographical Information System Branch amalgamated with the Information Branch during the year ended 30 June, 1998. (1) This promoted efficiency in the production of high quality maps, publications and exhibitions. Electronic Service delivery increased following the development of a website and continuing growth of e-mail. The branch maintained an Information Centre in which inquires were handed from various places in NSW, other states and overseas increasingly by electronic means. The staff were able to assist clients to obtain information relevant to legislation, and services of other agencies by using their websites. Traditional publication sales, mail order and telephone inquires were also handled by the service. Changing technology enabled more cost effective and rapid production of the various publications. The Branch also provided photographic services to enhance publications and displays and a research library for the use of staff and the public.(2) A survey of the Department’s stakeholders was undertaken in 1998/99 to discover community perception of the role of the Department of Urban Affairs and Planning. The stakeholders reinforced the need for a planning agency with state-wide responsibility but recommended improvements in the processes of consultation and communication. As a result a Communications branch was formed to work in partnership with its stakeholders and deliver the necessary services .
