Full description

On 7 March, 1906 Boomi was declared Shire No. 44 under the Local Government (Shires) Act, 1905. (1) On 26 October, 1917 the Parishes of Gehan and Eckford, County of Jamison were transferred from the Shire of Boomi to Namoi Shire (2) The headquarters of the Boomi Shire was in Moree. The Council shared accommodation with the Boolooroo Council until 1938. There was a high level of Co-operation between the Boomi. Boolooroo and Moree Councils and in 1955 the Moree and District Local Government Standing Committee was formed to co-ordinate the activities of the three councils. (3) The Committee of Inquiry into Local Government Areas and Administration in New South Wales in 1974 recommended the formation of a local government district consisting of the Municipality of Moree and the Shires of Boomi and Boolooroo (4) The Local Government Areas Amalgamation Act, 1980 (Act No. 110, 1980) United the Shires of Boomi and Boolooroo and the Municipality of Moree to form the Shire of Moree Plains.
