Full description

A committee was elected at a public meeting in Armidale on 23 March 1887 to organise a fire brigade, and a Government grant for this purpose was received on 10 December 1889 (1). On 14 April 1891, a tender for the erection of a fire station was accepted. (2). A building situated on part of the Gas Works property was rented on Beardy Street from the Municipal Council. (3). On 9 October 1906, the Armidale Fire Brigade Board resolved that an emphatic protest against the new Fire Brigades Bill be entered on the grounds that it was unjust and disadvantageous to Country Brigades (4). The Armidale Fire Brigades Board which had controlled the station since its inception (5) was dissolved in 1910 and held its final meeting on 2 May 1910 (6). Under Section 13 of the Fire Brigades Act 1909, the properties of Armidale Fire Brigade Board were vested in the Board of Fire Commissioners (7). A new fire station was erected at Rousden Street in October 1921 (8). By 2000 the brigade was located at 66 Barney Street, Armidale (9).
