Full description
On 31 March 1988 the Administrative Changes Act, 1976 was amended to enable the revenue collection functions of the Department of Finance to be transferred to the Treasury Department. (1) Treasury accommodated the responsibilities within the new structure comprising the Office of Financial Management and the Office of State Revenue. (2)
The Office of State Revenue collected revenue for the State Government so that services may be provided to the people of NSW. The functions of the Office were to collect revenue, develop policy and implement legislation relating to the State taxes. (3)
From 4 April 2011 the Office of State Revenue was removed from the Treasury and transferred to the Principal Department, the Department of Finance and Services. (4) On 23 April 2014 the Department of Finance and Services became the Office of Finance and Services (OFS), a public service executive agency related to The Treasury. (5) From 1 July 2015 the Office of Finance and Services was renamed as the Department of Finance, Services and Innovation. (6)
From 31 July 2017 the name of the Office of State Revenue was changed to Revenue NSW. In 2017, "Revenue NSW contributed to a safe society by managing fines and payments due to Government and also provided valuable assistance to families and enterprises across NSW by administering grants and subsidies. Revenue NSW also recovered debt to provide an equitable outcome for the community." Revenue NSW started administering Emergency Services Levy from 1 July 2017. Previously, these funds were collected by Office of Emergency Management (NSW Reconstruction Authority).(7)
At the abolishment of Department of Finance, Services and Innovation, on 1 July 2019, staff from Revenue NSW were transferred to the Department of Customer Service. (8)
On 6 July 2020, Revenue NSW was subject to a functional and reporting line change, becoming a standalone Division within the Department of Customer Service with the responsible Deputy Secretary reporting directly to the Secretary. (9)
