The Directorate of Special Bicentennial Events was established by the Government to prepare a program of special events, official openings and artistic enhancement for the Bicentennial (1). The Directorate was directly responsible for the official opening of Mt Tomah Botanic Gardens, Bicentennial Park Homebush, Federation Pavilion Centennial Park, the upgrading and beautification of Macquarie St and Circular Quay, National Australia Day celebrations in Sydney, Parramatta Cultural Centre, Illawarra Performing Arts Centre, Newcastle Foreshore Development and the Bicentennial orchestral concert series in Parramatta, Newcastle and Wollongong (2). The Directorate of Special Bicentennial Events ceased operation of 31 May 1989 (3).
