In 1946 the Ministry for Tourist Activities was established The principal functions were the administration and management of tourists bureaux in Sydney and other capital cities, encouraging the development of tourist attractions and facilities in NSW, and stimulating the flow of tourist traffic to and within NSW (1). In 1968 the Department of Tourist Activities became known as the Department of Tourism (2). The Department provided policy advice to the Minister and Government on tourism related matters and encouraged tourism development throughout the State. The Department's major activities involved the promotion of tourism to and within NSW, the administration of the Tourist Industry Development Act, 1976 (Act No.58, 1976), and the operation of information centres (3). In July 1982, following a review of ministerial portfolios, the Department of Tourism was abolished and its functions assumed by the Department of Leisure, Sport and Tourism (4).
