Full description

On the 1 January 1919 the Tourist Bureau became a separate agency. (1) The responsibilities of the Bureau were managing the various tourist resorts and the tourist bureau which conducted tours and published promotional material on NSW tourist attractions. The Tourist resorts were - Jenolean Caves, Abercrombie Caves, Yaggangobily Caves, Wombeyan Caves, Hotel Kosciusko and Jenolan Caves House. (2) By 1923 the Bureau was known as the Government Tourist Bureau. (3) In 1938 Management of the Tourist Bureau was transferred to the Department of Railways (4). Legislation was required to transfer ownership of the various tourist resorts and changes were introduced to increase services to tourists, These included opening branches of the bureau at Wynyard and Central Railway stations and upgrading facilities at the resorts. (5) In 1946 tourism reverted to ministerial control and the Department of Tourist Activities was established (3).
