Full description

The Ophir County Council was constituted under the Local Government Act, 1919 (Act No.41, 1919), effective from 1 January 1956. The Local Government areas covered by the County Council were the Municipality of Orange and the Shires of Canobolas, Lyndhurst and Molong. Each area was a county electorate and the first general election was held by 7 December 1955. (1)

Ophir County Council was granted the powers and duties under Section 382 and associated sections of the Local Government Act relating to the construction, extension, protection, maintenance, control and management of works for the supply of electricity; and the supply and installing of electrical fittings and appliances in the District area of Ophir County. (2)

From 1 July 1962 part of Boree Shire was removed from the Central West County District and added to the Ophir County District. Boree Shire Council was added as a county electorate to the Ophir County Council. (3)

The Shires of Canobolas, Lyndhurst, Boree and Molong amalgamated into the Shire of Cabonne, Shire of Blaney and the City of Orange, previously a municipality, on 1 October 1977. The county electorates of the County Council changed to City of Orange, Shire of Cabonne, Shire of Blayney with four, two and two delegates elected from each area respectively. (4)

Ophir County Council was dissolved under the provisions of the Electricity (Amendment) Act, 1993 (Act No 24, 1993, which was proclaimed on the 1 July 1993. Functions of the Council were transferred to Ophir Electricity. (5).
