Full description

From 1 July 1933 the Railway Institute was part of the Secretariat Branch. The Institute also housed a Library, Billiards Room and Ladies Gymnasium. From 1930 to 1971 the Institute held the Sydney Eisteddfod (originally established for Railway employees and their families later being opened to the public). (1) With the creation of the Public Transport Commission on 20 October 1972 railway staff education became the responsibility of the Staff Development Centre within the Training and Development Branch. The Apprentice Training College at Chullora was opened on 29 May 1975. (2) In 1995 the Railway Institute Building was being used as office space for the Welfare Officer, Hugart Pty Ltd, the Australian Credit Union Historical Cooperative and could also be hired by various Railway groups and the general public.
