The Zoological Parks Board Act, 1973 (Act No.34, 1973) constituted the Zoological Board of New South Wales. (1) Under the provisions of the Zoological Parks Act, which received assent on 2 May 1973 (2) and commenced on 4 June 1973 (3), the Board had the authority to establish, maintain, and control lands or premises vested in or held by the Board. These lands or premises include zoological gardens, aquariums and similar institutions in which animals are kept or displayed for educational, cultural, scientific or recreational purposes. (4) The Board is made up of ten members appointed by the Governor upon the nomination of the Minister. An "official member" is also appointed from the Ministry. (5)
As a consequence of the Exhibited Animals Protection Act, 1986 (Act No. 123, 1986), the Zoological Parks Board Act, 1973 was amended by the Zoological Parks Board (Exhibited Animals) Amendment Act, 1986 (Act No.125, 1986). This enabled the Board to exercise and perform such other powers, authorities, duties and functions as may be deferred or imposed on the Board by or under this or any other Act. (6)
The Zoological Parks Board (Amendment) Act, 1988 (Act No.4, 1988) which was proclaimed on 22 July 1988, amended the Zoological Parks Board Act, 1973, with respect to the membership of the Zoological Parks Board. The Act increased the number of Board members to thirteen all appointed by the Governor. (7)
Under the Zoological Parks Board (Conservation and Environment Objectives) Amendment Act 1992, (Act No.44, 1992) assented to on 19 May 1992 and proclaimed on 1 March 1997 (8), the Board was given defined responsibilities in education, conservation, research and recreation. (9)
The Zoological Parks Board presently operates Taronga Zoo in Mosman and Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo.
In 2008 the Zoological Parks Board changed its name to the Taronga Conservation Society Australia.
