Full description

Maitland Court of Petty Sessions was created on 30 September 1832 under  s.17 of the Offenders Punishment and Justices Summary Jurisdiction Act of 1832 (3 Wil.IV No.3). (1)

On 9 November 1835 the Colonial Secretary prepared a statement defining the regions within the Maitland District. The land on the South East Side of Wallis Creek was designated 'East Maitland'. (2) The name of the Court appears to have been changed about that time.

The records of the Morpeth Court of Petty Sessions were transferred to the East Maitland Court of Petty Sessions on 20 April 1942, when the Morpeth Court of Petty Sessions was abolished. (3)

The East Maitland Court of Petty Sessions was abolished on 31 December 1984, when the Local Courts Act 1982 abolished all Courts of Petty Sessions and replaced these with Local Courts. (4)
