Full description
The New South Wales Steam Navigation Board was constituted under the Steam Navigation Act, 1852 to administer the laws relating to steamships, harbours and navigable waters. There was, however, no facility for the Steam Navigation Board to establish any competency examinations for Masters, Engineers or Mates. The members of the Board were appointed by the Governor in Council and were drawn from the colonial shipping industry. With the dissolution of the Light, Pilot and Navigation Board on 31 March 1858 the Steam Navigation Board performed the duties of the Pilot Board until March 1859 when the Pilot Board was re-established. The Steam Navigation Board was abolished on 2 April 1872 when its duties were taken over by the Marine Board.User Contributed Tags
