Full description
The Technical Education and New South Wales University of Technology Act, 1949 (Act No. 11, 1949) repealed the Technical Education Act, 1940 (Act No. 20 1940) and established a separate Department of Technical Education on 1 July 1949. (1) A Director under the control of the Minister for Education administered this new department. From 1951 the University of Technology provided many diploma courses previously offered by the Department of Technical Education, but these were usually at higher level than the previous technical college courses. As the university could use technical college facilities these advanced course were available throughout the state. In 1959 many of the diploma courses were withdrawn from the technical education system to become part-time degrees offered by the re-named University of New South Wales. The diploma courses remaining with the technical colleges included Art, Management, and Public Administration. Demand for technical college courses whether trade, post-trade, certificate, or post-certificate continued to increase to provide qualifications in technical and managerial fields. In 1963 a Science Diploma course was re-introduced. In 1965 an Institute of Technology was re-established.
