Governor Darling appointed John Thomas Campbell as Collector of Customs on 9 April 1827 in place of the Naval Officer John Piper. In December 1827 Campbell resigned from this post. (1) Captain F.N. Rossi who had been appointed as Comptroller (to check landed goods) became the acting Customs Collector. (2) Other customs related appointments by Governor Darling included A.P. Onslow as Searcher, and Samuel North as Keeper of the Bonded Store. Full instructions detailing the most important duties of the subordinate customs officers were given for the guidance of the Collector and Comptroller. (3) In July 1828 Michael Cullin Cotton and Burman Langa were appointed by the British Treasury to be Collector, and Comptroller of Customs, respectively. This was part of a general move to place all colonial customs services under direct imperial control. These men took up duty from 2 February 1829.
