Full description

The Agricultural Research Institute Wagga Wagga commenced on or about 1 July, 1953 when A.T. Pugsley was appointed as the Director. (1)

The Institute became a model for regional research stations throughout NSW. (2)

In 1964 the Institute reported working on both short and longer term projects in addition to basic research.. Research was carried out in the general areas of plant and animal industries but excluded the fields of horticulture and dairying. (3)

Some of the research projects in 1968 included wheat improvement, wheat quality investigations, oat improvement, weeds and weed control, plant pathology, plant psychology, animal husbandry, crop agronomy, fertilizers and soil chemistry. (4)

The Institute was responsible to the Division of Research Services from 1972. (5)

The exact date of the abolition of the Institute is unclear. The Manager was advised of a land transfer from the Department of Agriculture to the Department of Technical and Further Education on 5 December, 1983. (6) It is uncertain whether this was the entire property. It appears that the Institute ceased to exist at the end of 1983.
