The Central Roads Board, the first agency concerned with the establishment of main roads and bridges, was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744).

The purpose of this series was to keep a record of the advertisement of tenders for contracts to be let by the Department for the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges.. With some variation of format, the series records the date of the advertisement and the date for the receipt of the tender, the nature of the work advertised, the Road District or Board [District Roads Board} where the work was located, the newspapers (metropolitan and provincial) in which advertisements were inserted and remarks pertaining to the re-advertisement of tenders or other such matters.
