The Central Roads Board, the first agency concerned with the establishment of main roads and bridges, was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744).

This series consists of the records of the Advance Account as authorised by the Secretary and Treasurer of the Department. Receipts were from the Treasury and from reimbursements. Disbursements were for wages, expenses related to toll collection, and minor maintenance works for roads and bridges as authorised by the central office of the Department.

VPRS 12682/P1 was formerly registered as Unit 2 of VPRS 1141 Journal. It was reserialised in 2001 as part of the ARAD Project.
