Full description

This series consists of registers of Voluntary Boarder patients admitted to Aradale Mental Hospital (VA 2841).

The purpose of these records was to provide summary information on the admission and discharge of voluntary boarders.

Voluntary boarders were those patients who made a request to be cared for as a patient in a Hospital for the Insane, or a Licensed House. Voluntary boarders were not to be deemed a "lunatic" or a "lunatic patient" within the meaning of the Lunacy Acts. Voluntary boarders could be discharged on their own application. They usually agreed to a definite period of residence.

The registers list admissions chronologically, and detail the following information:
