Administering oral vaccines and modulating gastrointestinal immunity using a new physical device [ 2018 - 2021 ]

Brief description Oral vaccination is an ideal delivery route due to its ease of administration, abundance of immune cells in the GI tract and production of protective mucosal immunity at pathogen entry sites. However, its exploitation is limited by delivery challenges such as vaccine degradation in the stomach and poor uptake across mucosa. I will develop a biomedical device which carries and directly delivers vaccines to intestinal mucosa, which ultimately has the potential to replace the needle and syringe.
