The Accident Compensation Commission was established under the provisions of the Accident Compensation Act 1985 (No.10191) which came into operation on 1 September 1985.The Commission was one of four related agencies established in 1985 under the Accident Compensation Act 1985 and the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1985. The other three agencies were the Accident Compensation Tribunal (VA 2776), the Victorian Accident Rehabilitation Council (VA 2697) and the Occupational Health and Safety Commission (VA 1647).
The Accident Compensation Commission and the Accident Compensation Tribunal were successors to the Workers Compensation Board (VA 876).
The Commission worked largely through separate and public sector agents who were contracted to perform its key functions. Such agents included Claims Administration agents, Fund Management agents, and Levy Collection agents.
On 1 December 1992 the Commission was superseded by the Victorian WorkCover Authority (VA 3081).
