The Central Road Board, the first agency concerned with the establishment of main roads and bridges, was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744).The records in this series provide a summary of payments to some contractors, supervisory and ancillary labour and manual labourers primarily concerned with the maintenance of roads and bridges. Listed under the heading of the work project (which gives the location of the road or bridge), the number of the Voucher is recorded with the persons name, a description of the work or the other reason for the payment, the days, yards and rate and the total amount. Also entered here are payments for incidentals such as postage and small pieces of equipment e.g. axe and pick handles.
