Full description

The ABN_continuousGas-CFA is the measured methane (CH4) and carbon monoxide (CO) from the ABN (Aurora Basin North) ice core
(ABN1314) collected during the Antarctic 13/14 season.

Lineage

Progress Code: completed
Statement: CO data are not calibrated for CFA (system blank and solubility); CO variability is not affected by this lack of absolute calibration Depth scale uncertainty : typically about 6cm; Depth Scale was provided by J. McConnell, scientist to be contacted if more infos required

Notes

Purpose
This project plans recovery of an ice core from a new site in the interior of East Antarctica. The site, known as Aurora Basin North (ABN), lies 600km inland of Casey Station which has sufficient snowfall to provide ice core records with near annual resolution. These records will extend to 2000 years and fill a large gap in the array of Antarctic climate records. The ice core records will improve capacity for reconstructing Antarctic climate and understanding regional and hemispheric links. The ice core will also be analysed for a series of trace elements using a unique high resolution melter-CFA-TED system (McConnell et al., 2007). The CFA system can produce a continuous record at 1cm resolution, giving ~11 samples per year at an estimated accumulation rate of ~11 cm ice /year. The DRI system will produce a broad range of chemical species and elements related to continental dust tracers (Mg, Al, P, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Rb, Sr, Pb, U, REE, Particle cnt/size); Industrial pollution tracers (S, V, Cr, Co, Cu, Ba, Pb, Bi, acidity, NO3); Biomass burning tracers (H2O2, NO3, NH4, Mn, Rb, Br, acidity); Nutrient tracers (Mn, total and soluble Fe, total and soluble P, NO3); Seawater tracers (Na, Mg, S, Cl, Ca, Rb, Sr, Br, I, U); volcanic tracers (S, Cu, In, Cd, Tl, Pb, Bi, Liquid conductivity, acidity). CH4 and CO measurements were made by Xavier Fain using the SARA laser spectrometer.
