Brief description

Database includes data on abalone size at maturity, collected from sites around Tasmania from 1988.

Lineage

Maintenance and Update Frequency: irregular
Statement: Sample size from each site is typically 200 animals/site, across a broad size range. Collection at each site ranged across 20m - 100m of reef. Additional abalone collected around the size at maturation at some sites, if insufficient animals in that size collected in the first collection. Processing of animals was done in two ways; 1) at the Marine Research Laboratory, Taroona with additional shell morphometric data recorded; 2) at sea where shell length, shell fouling, sex, and from 2004 onwards qualitative gonad state.

Notes

Purpose
To provide information for the sustainable management of the state's abalone fishery via a variety of methods, including setting appropriate size limits, modelling estimates of abundance and detecting changes in median length of abalone.
