Brief description

This data set is from a survey comparing the size and shape of limpets in the high intertidal zone compared to the low intertidal zone on a rocky shore in Western Port Bay, Victoria. On 10 sampling occasions from April to October 1987 the length, width, height, distance from apex to the posterior margin, distance from apex to the anterior margin and the number of ridges of 350 limpets were measured in both zones. The tenacities of individual limpets in the 2 zones were collected in September and October 1987. Tenacity was measured with a hand-held device that applied a horizontal force until the limpet was detached from the substrate.

Lineage

Maintenance and Update Frequency: notPlanned
Statement: Shell parameters were measured using vernier calipers to the nearest 0.05cm. The hand-held device used to measure the tenacity of a limpet was a 2000g Ohaus dial-spring scale enclosed in a 365mm long piece of 80mm plastic pipe with a hook attached to one end. The pipe was surrounded by another slightly large plastic pipe with a removable rod which allowed the scale to fix onto the outside pipe. The edge of the inner pipe was placed against the base of a limpet and a steady horizontal force was applied by pushing the outer pipe, until the limpet was detached. Measurements were in grams (to the nearest 10g).
Statement: Columns in the data sets are: ShellParameters - Zone (1 or 2), Sampling occasion (1-4), Length, Width, height, distance from apex to the posterior margin (PostApex), distance from apex to the anterior margin (AntApex). AntApex was measured only on the 4th sampling occasion. Ridges - Length, number of ridges (Ridge), Zone (1 or 2). Tenacity - Measurement of force (KG), Length, Zone (1 or 2), Sampling occasion (1-8).
