Full description

This dataset contains a 2000 year surface wind speed reconstructions based on proxy records from the Law Dome ice core record (see https://data.aad.gov.au/metadata/DSS_2k_data_compilation).

The calibration target for the reconstruction is the ERA-20C reanalysis 10m wind speed for the period 1900-2010CE.

The reconstruction for each one degree of longitude and latitude cell has been calculated using the Segmented Linear Integral Correlation Kernel Ensemble Reconstruction (SLICKER) method, to produce an ensemble of plausible non-linear multi-variate reconstructions. The dataset comprises the central tendency, uncertainty in central tendency, and spread (standard deviation equivalent) of the ensemble over the last 2000 years for each one degree by one degree cell.

Two reconstruction datasets are given, one where the calibration and scaling is to match the M-estimator central tendency and and Qn range of the ERA-20C calibration data. The alternative dataset has been re-normalised to match the mean and standard deviation of the ERA-20C calibration data.

More information on the reconstructions and the SLICKER method can be found in the accompanying publication:

The two files in this dataset are

surface_windspeed_1_2016_CE.nc (calibrated against M-estimator and Qn range)
alternative_surface_windspeed_1_2016_CE.nc calibrated against mean and standard deviation)
